1992 was an incredible time to be involved with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the Government was about to shut down most of the coal industry including Grimethorpe the colliery that we represented, and we won the National Brass Band Championship in the most extraordinary circumstances.

Surrounded by the world’s press the band brought Philip Wilby’s music to life including the vexed question of how to best represent the voice of God speaking to his people.

Allan Morrison in the highest point in the Royal Albert Hall totally unseen by either the audience or me the conductor was imperious in the role, and nobody who was there will ever forget it.
