Every year, the Worshipful Company of Musicians award a medal in the name of John Henry Iles, to a person who has made a significant contribution to the brass band community.

In 2011, I was the recipient and it meant a great deal to me, because in my mind we all owe a huge debt to this great man, not least because of the vast amount of music he commissioned, from the greatest composers of the day, for the brass bands to play at his National Championships.

There's a free extract from this edition of Frankly Speaking with my personal reflections about John Henry Iles below.
