THE MUSIC PODCAST: 43 (EXCERPT)
"Hello I’m Frank Renton introducing this week's music podcast.
In this week’s programme I’ve got original music by Judith Bingham. She is a Fellow of The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester which is often referred to as ‘Brass Band Central’.
Her music has a brilliant sense of musical drama and imagery, never put to better use than her piece, Four Minute Mile. The instruction to sprint away with great vigour from the starting pistol is evident, as is the slight relaxing of pace towards the end of the second lap.
Naturally a bell signifies the start of the last lap and the excitement of the headlong dash for the tape. But does it take Black Dyke longer than 4 minutes to play it?
The Symphonic Brass of London Dectet take us to Granada and there’s a brand new CD from Ross Dunne, another young Tenor Horn player creating new music for the instrument.
There’s the fabulous Alison Balsom, plus the final two movements of Elgar Howarth’s monumental transcription of Pictures at an Exhibition."
