THE MUSIC PODCAST: 78 (TRAIL)
"Another week and another best of brass music podcast. This week I’ve got the classic Euphonium solo Grandfather’s Clock, played by Simon Willis, then there’s the arrangement of three American folk songs, which James Curnow turned into his Appalachian Mountain Suite.
I wonder if like me you’ve never knowingly heard any music by Sam Fonteyn? Unless you’re familiar with his Pop Goes Bach which was used for the BBC’s Ski Sunday theme, his Music for a Pageant is going to come as a pleasant surprise.
As will hearing the famous tune from Beethoven’s Choral Symphony re- imagined for brass, by Black Dyke’s international composer in residence, Fredrick Schjelderup, and excitingly recorded at the Royal Albert Hall by them, just as the band world emerged from lockdown.
So all great music and a few surprises as well in my latest music podcast."
