Every week Frank selects his own favourite track of the week from our weekly Music Podcast, and it's completely free here on Frank Renton on Brass.

"Cast your mind back to Brass in Concert 2011, and the visitors from North America, the Brass Band of Central Florida, under the leadership of Chad Shoopman.

They had taken part in the Gala Concert on the Saturday evening and perhaps still suffering from the journey from Florida to Gateshead they were not at their best, and they knew it. The whole band was determined to make a mark on Sunday in the competition proper and as I talked to them before they went on stage there was a pent up energy about the whole band.

As I went on stage to announce them I could sense that the audience were also really looking forward to the band’s performance, the bands from North America, who had appeared in previous years, including Central Florida on a previous visit had really upped the ante in terms of musical entertainment and there was a pleasurable sense of anticipation about the whole place.

Florida did not disappoint them, the whole performance had an energy and sense of purpose that the audience warmed to, and it was obvious that it was all a bit special.

For their finale Chad had chosen to play excerpts from a virtuoso piece that Philip Sparke had written for the European Championships of 2004, it was sensational, and afterwards it was obvious to me that the band had given everything they had in that performance and they came within a whisker of making history.

My track of the week is, The Brass Band of Central Florida playing Excerpts from Music of the Spheres.
