Every week Frank selects his own favourite track of the week from our weekly Music Podcast, and it's completely free here on Frank Renton on Brass.

"Doubtless the hot bed of brass band culture in Switzerland is the Valais one of the 26 Cantons that make up Switzerland, and it’s home to the Matterhorn and countless brass bands.

The Ensemble de Cuivres Valaisan was formed in 1967 and is one of the most successful and popular bands in the region, with a tremendous policy of encouraging young musicians and composers.

One such is Ludovic Neurohr who has gone from being a cornet player in his village brass band to be one of Switzerland’s most successful young composers, and he came to everyone’s notice in 2009 when he was awarded second prize at the European Brass Band Championship’s composers competition.

I subsequently met up with him in Sion the capital city of Valais, and as we walked around the streets he told me of his hopes and aspirations. Ten years later in 2019, when he was commissioned to write the test piece for the European Championships in Montreux, many of those hopes and aspirations were already fulfilled.

My Track of the Week on Frank Renton on Brass this week is that prize winning piece from 2009, played by Ensemble de Cuivres Valaisan, Whirl by Ludovic Neurohr."

We hope you’ll enjoy our free track of the week - and then will join us to hear all our many programmes. It’s a lot less than a cup of coffee a week!
