TRACK OF THE WEEK
Every week Frank selects his own favourite track of the week from our weekly Music Podcast, and it's completely free here on Frank Renton on Brass.
"When I hear of young musicians who are prepared to do something a bit different, and are hugely successful at it then I’m delighted. When it’s four young brass players all of whom I have worked with, usually at Grimethorpe and know well, then I am even more delighted.
The success of the A4 Brass Quartet who, since they first go together in 2013, have won countless competitions and awards is no doubt down to a lot of hard work, but all four are tremendously talented.
Jamie Smith played both solo cornet and flugel for me at Grimethorpe and is a fine and versatile player, now turning his hand to conducting with the Hade Edge Band. Jonathan Bates the outstanding tenor horn player is also carving a niche for himself as a conductor and increasingly as a composer. Mike Cavanagh is simply one of the finest baritone players around, winning plaudits at every level, National Youth Brass Band, Royal Northern College of Music, Grimethorpe and Black Dyke have all played host to his talents, and finally the Euphonium player Chris Robertson, a product of the Carnoustie Youth Brass Band, he is now Principal at Brighouse and Rastrick and with A4 not only arranging much of the music that they play, but is known to turn his hand to a bit of singing and ukulele playing, now that’s talent.
Four fine young musicians who make up the A4 Brass Quartet and have just been made Associates of the Royal Northern College of Music. My track of the week is Toccata by Jonathan Bates played by the A4 Brass Quartet."
We hope you’ll enjoy our free track of the week - and then will join us to hear all our many programmes. It’s a lot less than a cup of coffee a week!
