TRACK OF THE WEEK

Every week Frank selects his own favourite track of the week from our weekly Music Podcast, and it's completely free to listen too, here on Frank Renton on Brass. As he says this week,

"In the mid-1990s the Stavanger Brass Band was already looking at new ways to broaden their appeal and a couple of appearances at the Stavanger Jazz Festival in conjunction with the brass ensemble Brazz Brothers certainly fitted the bill.

Jan Magne Forde is one of the Brazz Brothers and an outstanding composer and arranger and the band asked him to write a whole programme for them to perform at the SIDDIS Competition in 1999.

SIDDIS is, I guess, the Norwegian equivalent of Brass in Concert, but the bands involved have over the years been really innovative in their choice of programme.

So Jan Magne wrote the music and the band asked me to conduct it, and I leapt at the opportunity to work with such an original writer. He wrote a five moment suite with at the centre a solo for Flugelhorn that he had originally written for himself to perform in the Cathedral of his home town of Trondheim utilising the very resonant acoustic in the building.

So my the Track of the Week, taken from this week’s music podcast dedicated to music written for, and played by, Flugelhorn players is Domen by Jan Magne Forde played by Margrethe Aase with the Stavanger Brass Band conducted by me, and recorded at a live performance in Stavanger 23 years ago. For me, it’s still electric today and I hope you agree!"

We hope you’ll enjoy our free track of the week that's below - and then will join us to hear all our many programmes, interviews and music podcasts. It’s a lot less than a cup of coffee a week!
